Creating Liberatory Culture

When the culture you want feels within your grasp but just out of reach
Your organization’s commitment to equity and justice is real. You have the values, the language, and the commitment. Living them out together is its own kind of work.
Culture gets built in small moments: who speaks first in a meeting, how a disagreement is handled, what everyone knows but no one says. Those moments add up to how your organization feels to the people inside it.

Changing them takes more than a new policy or a good intention. It takes the ability to notice what's happening while you're in the middle of it, and the courage to name and shift it.

Creating Liberatory Culture is a cohort for building that ability. You'll bring real situations from your own organization and work through them with a consistent group of peers and an experienced guide, learning to rise above the day-to-day for a bird's-eye view where patterns come into focus.
By the end, you'll see your organization as a system rather than a collection of individuals, talk about hard things like race and power with more confidence, and have a framework to return to.
A cohort for building culture on purpose
A cohort training that meets monthly, bringing leaders together to explore how their organizations really work. Sara Joffe teaches the core ideas and guides the conversation. The real situations you bring become the case studies.

Executive directors, managers, and senior team members who want to shape how their organizations make decisions, handle conflict, and share power.

HR, people and culture, and equity staff who are charged with shifting culture and want to go beyond policy to how people actually work together.

Staff and emerging leaders who are the ones colleagues turn to, and who want a framework and a peer group to support the work.

A MOMEMENT TO REFLECT
Is this the right time for you?
Consider whether any of these experiences feel familiar.
Your organization says it values participation, but decisions are still held by a few people. You want to understand why, and how to open it up.
Conversations about race and power feel charged, or don’t happen at all. You’d like to move through them with more ease and less fear.
Change is stirring up strong feelings on your team. You want to know how to hold them well instead of just managing them.
You’ve done the workshops, and the learning hasn’t stuck. You’re ready for something that unfolds over time and connects to your real work.
Your team is committed to deciding together, but decisions take forever or never quite land. You want to know how to come to final decisions, and where participation has limits.
The same tensions keep coming back, no matter who’s in the room. You suspect it’s bigger than one person.
You’re the one colleagues turn to with culture questions. You want to offer more than a policy, and you’d like support doing it.
You’re looking for people outside your organization to think with: a trusted circle of peers working on the same questions.
If more than a few of these sound familiar, this cohort was built for you. Let’s talk about what you’re navigating.
WHAT YOU'LL LEAVE WITH
More perspective. More steadiness. More ways forward.

A systems view of your organization
Learn to see patterns instead of problem people. Understand why the same tensions keep returning and where the real leverage for change lives.
Steadiness in hard conversations
Build the skill to notice what’s happening in the moment and name it with honesty and care, including conversations about race, power, and decision-making.

Objective insight
We have no stake in old debates and no seat in existing hierarchies, so we can hold up an honest mirror. Through interviews, listening sessions, and landscape analysis, we gather what your board, staff, and community actually think, then reflect it back with care and candor.
